Reflecting on a morning of Insight and Inspiration. Today’s visit to Marketing Derby’s Annual Business Event was an enriching experience for both me and my 14-year-old daughter, Caitie. It provided her with a real-world glimpse into the business dynamics and vibrant enterprise culture of our city, which is especially valuable as she is currently deliberating her GCSE options. Our day was a tapestry of thought-provoking dialogue and motivational narratives, showcasing Derby as a city poised on the cusp of transformation. One of the startling revelations was on one hand, Derby boasts the highest average earnings outside of London, a beacon of prosperity and success. Yet, on the other, we were confronted with the stark reality of it also having the highest rate of child poverty in the country. Amid these revelations, we were also privy to the exciting developments on the horizon for Derby. The city is buzzing with anticipation for the investment projects set to unfold over the next 18 months. Notably, the Derby University’s new business school and a state-of-the-art performance venue promise to be game-changers for the local economy and culture. We were particularly moved by Steven Thai, the Managing Director of Ocean King. His story, alongside his & his parents’ journey in business, was delivered with such authenticity and passion that we were still reflecting on it on the way home. For Caitie, it was an exceptional introduction to the multifaceted world of business right here in Derby—a city of contrasts, challenges, and immense potential. My day started with a delightful commute to Haddon Hall, it then went downhill rapidly after my hot water thermos discharged 1.5 liters of boiling water into my tech bag and float. It was quite the unexpected "money laundering" situation! I want to give a special shoutout to my amazing husband, Bri, who went out of his way to drive an hour just to bring me a new izettle. Also, a huge thank you to my fellow traders for their unwavering support during this minor crisis. Sam from Patacake in our local village painstakingly hand-dried every coin in my float and the traders in the hall have supervised my tech bag drying by the fire. I have been overwhelmed with offers of chargers, wires, and moral support from my fellow artisans. Tough set up today in the most incredible location. A medieval hall is not exactly ideal for moving gin about on trolleys as there are lots of steps and very uneven ground. That said it’s worth every second of the pain as the setting is breathtaking. I have to thank fellow traders Sharp Turning, Giddy Kipper and Metal Manipulation and also the team at Haddon for being so accommodating. You all very generously made a really challenging job sooooo much easier today. It was an absolute delight to meet another Brian Withers and his wonderful wife over the weekend! It's quite ironic how they both reside near Lincoln, where my husband, who shares the same name, spent his childhood and has family connections. It's also very close to where my dear old dad settled in Sleaford. Interestingly enough, Brian Withers managed to confuse both me and our distillery team with his initial order! Today the last airworthy B-17 Flying Fortress in Europe – Sally B – combined forces with the RAF’s Avro Lancaster for a rare formation of the two most recognisable Allied heavy bombers of the war. It was the first time for more than 20 years that these aircraft have flown together and the first time ever that they have flown together at Duxford. Sally B is the name of an 1945-built Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress. At 78 years old, she is the only airworthy B-17 based in Europe. The Avro Lancaster is the most famous and successful RAF heavy bomber of World War Two. There are only two airworthy Lancasters left in the world - 7,377 were built.
